Alice Augusta Ball Endowed Scholarship
To honor Juneteenth, Ward Village donated to the Alice Augusta Ball Endowed Scholarship at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The school’s first African American female graduate and chemistry instructor, Alice Augusta Ball was responsible for developing the world’s earliest and most effective treatment for Hansen’s disease, or leprosy. This scholarship in her memory allows for underrepresented students to pursue degrees in chemistry, biology, and microbiology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
